Communicate Better

Communicate Better as an Agency

Communicate Better (CB) was created by Lilia Newman in order to meet the demands in providing speech-language therapy and evaluations to a larger number of children with speech-language impairments coming from several school districts from Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. All the professionals involved in the agency were selected based on their commitment to high standards of practice, strong work ethics and belief in the use of collaborative models between all the professionals involved in the therapeutic process of the patients and their families.

It was in 2012, when the cascade system was implemented by the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) so Lilia decided to make a proposal to the DOE to provide services as a tertiary agency through Communicate Better. Communicate Better was awarded the RFP contract to provide speech language therapy in English. Then in 2016 it was awarded to provide services in Spanish to District 15 only.

The Team

In these last years, Lilia Newman has been creating a team of part time and full-time independent providers speech-language pathologists. Every year now, CB has a team of 3 to 4 SLPs accepting a range from 15-20 cases into their caseload.

Allegra Sky Barlow

My name is Allegra Sky Barlow and I have been working as a pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP) since 2017 in Brooklyn, New York. I have a B.A. in French Studies from Bard College (2009) and an M.S. in speech language pathology from Brooklyn College (2017). I treat a variety of impairments, including speech sound difficulties, language delays and disorders, writing impairments, and sensory/motor feeding deficits. I work with children of all ages, but I am most interested in preschool-aged kids. I am passionate about incorporating art, music, movement, and play into therapy, engaging kids' imaginations, and working closely with parents and families to ensure the child's unique needs are being met.

"Review for Supervisory experience"
Lilia was my supervisor for my Clinical Fellow Year (CFY) and I couldn't have asked for a better guide to welcome me into the speech language pathology world. Lilia was endlessly supportive in showing me the ropes, reviewing my written work, and providing reflective supervision. She was nurturing and knowledgeable, opening my eyes to play-based therapy and constantly challenging me to think outside the box. While she gave me space to discover many things on my own, I never felt like I was flying blind or treating clients without the necessary background knowledge. Lilia continues to inspire me in her role as agency supervisor.

Supervision Process at Communicate Better

In the last years, Lilia Newman has been mentoring and supervising her team members especially the speech-language pathologists during their Clinical Fellow year. Lilia prefers to apply the notions of the "Reflective Supervision model" and combine with continuing education and training in specific approaches. The collaboration with universities like Brooklyn College for the last 10 years and recently with Columbia Teachers College has brought opportunities for Lilia to supervise graduate students during their internship process as well. Send your resume if you are interested in being part of the team.
